How Ella built her own glass ceiling

Ella’s career moved quickly at first. She was surprised by how fast she made it to Senior Director of a gigantic multinational corporation. From there, however, Ella discovered how hard it is to get promoted from Senior Director to VP. So now she was stuck at that level…and had been for far too long. She wanted to make that leap and contacted me for help.

She believed her next promotion was “up to them” and that they were dismissing her attempts to have that conversation. She was living with a sense of quiet frustration.

Ella‘s question was, “How do I get them to see I’m ready to be promoted to VP?”

To accomplish an outcome like that, you need to have some rock-solid basic fundamentals:

The first involves how you feel about them.  And the second involves how you feel about yourself.

The way Ella felt about senior management was intimidated.   These were the really high up senior leaders of the organization.  Their power scared her.

She also had a slight undercurrent of resentment toward them that they didn’t appreciate her more.

How she felt about herself was a strong sense of doubt in her ability to communicate effectively and be one of them.

Can you see how this mix of anxieties sets up a future for failure?

Just look at it from senior management’s point of view for a moment.

Imagine someone wants to be raised up to your level, yet their eyes fill with anxiety whenever they talk to you.  They’re visibly intimidated and you get the feeling they slightly resent you.

Would you invite them to join your club? A club where you have to deal with a tremendous number of high stakes and high pressures?  Probably not.

What’s more is that Ella’s doubt about herself would also mess with her ability to communicate with real intention.

Your ability to communicate with intention IS what gets your communication across and really makes it land. And that’s the secret to making what you want happen.

Senior executives are LOADED with intention.  That’s how they got there.

I worked with Ella to raise her affinity for senior management. She was so busy being afraid of and resenting them, she didn’t have any affinity for them.

When she mastered this skill, her affinity completely drove out her fear and resentment of them.  They were gone.

I also had her greatly increase her ability to communicate with intention. This vanquished all of her self-doubt.

Her ability to communicate causatively was in place, strong and powerful.

Her eyes were now radiant with an affinity and certainty that were irresistible.  The way she looks at you makes you listen and fills you with a VERY good feeling.

In our workshops, we always do initial videos of our clients so we can see exactly how they’re currently communicating and what precise skills they need to develop.

We video them throughout the workshop so they can see their progress, and then the final video shows them all the gains they’ve made.  It’s very dramatic.

Ella’s final video is a showstopper. In less than three minutes she can convince anyone she’s ready to be a VP. And she can do it in the warmest, friendliest, most affinity-filled way imaginable.

You find yourself smiling watching her final video and thinking, “Wow!  She really should be a VP. She deserves to lead and the organization deserves such a leader.”

When Ella saw her final video, the full realization of how powerful she was with these skills sunk in and she knew that she could carry them out with her into any life situation (even at home!).

I’m waiting to hear how it turns out. But I’m grinning, knowing Ella will be able to handle it.
